Chances are you have heard of, or read, the book “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” It’s a classic, and the other winter I adapted the story and took my pre-k class on an arctic adventure. In this post I will share with you what our adventure looks like, and also give you the FREE arctic adventure story (linked at the bottom of post) so you can use it in your classroom as well! We do our arctic adventure in the gym and I set it up before my students arrive. Here we go…
Before we go over to the gym I tell my students we are going on an arctic adventure and show them the book. We walk over to the gym and go to the first obstacle where we open the book and start our adventure.
Ready to begin! The “we’re going on an arctic adventure” page is the first page, and is also in between each obstacle. We wait for each student to finish the obstacle before moving on.
The first three obstacles (and what we used to create them) are:
- Mountains (Stepping Stones)
- Snowstorm (Indoor Snowballs)
- Tunnel (Children’s Tunnel)
The next three obstacles (and what we used to create them) are:
- Ice, each student gets 2 paper plates to skate across the pond (Coated Paper Plates)
- River (Bubble Wrap)
- Bridge (Balance Beam)
The next two obstacles (and what we used to create them) are:
- Rocks (Stacking Stumps) or (Silicone Mats) – we used both to make it longer
- Cave – you can make this with a sheet over chairs or use a pop up play tent
In the cave we find a polar bear and quickly run back through all the obstacles! My students love going on the arctic adventure and we do it several times through (if they would like), then I give them free time to explore all the stations and play with everything.
If you would like to do an arctic adventure with your students, here is a FREE COPY of the arctic adventure book. I printed the pages, laminated them, and used a spiral binding machine to turn it into a book. Have fun!
